In Situ Chemical Reduction

In-situ chemical reduction involves the placement of a reductant or reductant generating material in the subsurface for the purpose of degrading toxic organic compounds to potentially nontoxic or less toxic compounds, immobilizing metals such as Cr (VI) by adsorption or precipitation, and degrading non-metallic oxyanions such as nitrate. The most commonly used reductant is zero valent iron (ZVI), which is used to remediate halogenated ethenes and ethanes, energetics, and some metals/metalloids (Chromium (VI), Arsenic, and Uranium) [ITRC 2011].
